INTERNET USAGE & GROWTH  
  • There is a new Internet user every 1.67 seconds

    • Of those, 13 percent, or approximately 4 percent of the US population age 12 or older say they have purchased a grocery or drug product online
    • Using e-mail is the most common Internet-related activity, cited by 86 percent of Internet users
    • 69 percent of Internet users go online most often at home, 17 percent at work, 7 percent at school/place of study, 5 percent at a friend/relative's house, and 2 percent at a library
    • 44 percent of Internet users are online an hour or more in an average day when they use the Internet
    • Wired households (those with at least one member age 12 or older using the Internet) tend to be larger, more affluent, and better educated than non-wired households

  • 16 million new European consumers started using the Web, doubling Internet home penetration to nearly 49 million or 13% of the population

  • Rapid Growth of Number of Websites
    • 7.1 million unique web sites (a 50% increase over the previous year's total of 4.7 million)
    • The number of websites has nearly tripled in size in the last two years
    • 40% are public websites that offer content that is freely accessible by the general public Public web sites constitute 41% of the Web, or about 2.9 million sites
    • Private sites comprise 21% of the Web, or 1.5 million sites "Private sites" are those whose content is subject to explicit access restrictions (e.g., Internet Protocol filters or password authentication), or is not intended for public use (e.g., web interfaces to privately owned hardware devices such as printers or routers)
    • The remaining 2.7 million sites - or about 38% of the Web - are provisional sites: their content is in an unfinished or transitory state (e.g., server default pages or "Site under construction" notices)
    • Adult sites - those offering sexually explicit content - now constitute about 2% of the public Web, or 70,000 sites

  • Spam (or unsolicited e-mail) accounts for 10% of total e-mail volume in the U.S.

  • The online retail market is expected to grow to $11.4 billion in sales this holiday season, approximately double the revenue for the same period last year, according to Internet quality measurement firm Gomez

  • $336 Billion in Business-to-business (B-to-B) Trade this year
  • $6.3 Trillion in Business-to-business (B-to-B) Trade by 2005
  • 70% of net users had bought online within the previous 90 days

    • Based on recent research of the conditions in 52 countries, Forrester projects that the global economy will enter this critical stage in 2001
    • Worldwide Net commerce -- both B2B and B2C -- will hit $6.8 trillion in 2004
    • North America will grab half of all online sales in 2004. The US will remain the global eCommerce leader with online sales reaching $3.2 trillion in 2004
    • West European eCommerce will hit $1.5 trillion.
    • Latin America, after a late start, will reach $82 billion in 2004.

    • More than 3 out of 4 U.S. internet users will be purchasing online by 2003.
    • The number of U.S. internet shoppers will increase by 73% to 63.4 million by year-end 2000
    • and will soar to 106 million by 2003.
    • 77% of Internet Users Will Be Shopping On-Line by 2003
    • U.S. revenues from online consumer shopping will reach $37 billion by year-end 2000
    • and will grow to $104 billion in 2003
    • 68% of all U.S. web users will be shopping online by year-end 2000
    • almost 34 million U.S. households are actively using the internet
    • and 23.5 million, or 69% have made a purchase.
    • By 2003, 52 million households will be online, and more than 42 million will be buying online.
    • By year-end 2000, 93% of internet shoppers will become internet buyers purchasing $627 worth of goods online per person, up from $500 in 1999. This figure will double to $1,033 by 2003.
